LOOKWIDE WALK

Updated 16 October 2008

Baden-Powell's first Scout camp was held in Northumberland, a few miles north of Hexham.  The site at Lookwide is now covered by woodland, and in the centre there is a memorial recording the event.

The camp B-P held on Brownsea Island is mistakenly referred to ask the first Scout camp, but more accurately it was an experimental camp for putting his theories into practice.

All of the land in the area is privately owned, and it is essential that only agreed footpaths are used.  There there is a short designated walk to the Lookwide site and a those who complete it may claim a certificate, and wear a cloth badge (shown to the right) on their uniform.

Newcastle Central District look after the walk, certificates and badges.  For further details you should contact Louis Robdrop on 0191 2860279, who can also offer coach hire.  You can also contact County Office (0191 2812233) or Newcastle Office (0191 2811388).

I
t is interesting to note that the camp was planned to last two weeks.  The second week was to be spent near the coast at Blyth, at a site regularly used by the Boys Brigade.  Due to heavy rain during the first week, the transport could not be used on the site, and they stayed were they were.  The site for the second week is in the Blyth Valley Scout District.  Our chance of fame was killed by rain!
