One of the biggest myths about Scouting is that Groups are closing down due to a lack of young people wanting to become Members. Nothing could be further from the truth; Scouting in the UK is a growing Movement and we currently have 30,000 young people on our waiting lists simply because we do not have enough adults to help out.

‘Scouting is a character factory.’ Not our words, but those of our lead volunteer, chief scout Bear Grylls. Are you ready to inspire a generation of young people to experience fun, friendship and real adventure? The opportunities to volunteer with us are flexible. Think of something you’d like to do and chances are it’s just what we require.

Our volunteers get involved on their terms and not all roles involve working with young people. If you can give a little time (or a lot) to help improve young lives in your community, we’d love to hear from you.

Did you know?

  • All Scout volunteers are unpaid and the majority have a full-time job and family
  • 44% of our leaders are female
  • Many volunteers help out on a flexible basis due to other commitments
  • 27% of volunteers join because they are a parent of a young member
  • Volunteers don’t have to wear uniform
  • All leaders are covered by a comprehensive insurance policy while taking part in Scouting
  • All new leaders in Scouting go through a criminal records check to ensure they are fit to work with young people.
